Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting children's right to education, particularly in conflict-affected regions. Addressing the UN Security Council’s open debate on ending grave violations against children in armed conflict, HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted the country’s international efforts and leadership in child protection.
Sheikha
Alya underscored Qatar’s strong partnership with the United Nations and its
hosting of the Analysis and Outreach Hub of the Office of the Special
Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. She noted that the centre plays
a critical role in advancing strategies to safeguard children in conflict
zones. She also marked the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution
1612, calling for concrete actions to implement its commitments.
Expressing deep concern over the rising number of
grave violations, Sheikha Alya referred to the UN Secretary-General’s report
which revealed that 2024 saw the highest recorded levels of violence against
children in armed conflicts. She strongly condemned the Israeli occupation's
violations against children in Gaza, and called on the international community
to compel Israel to abide by international humanitarian law and end its war.
Sheikha Alya stressed that the use of explosive weapons in populated areas, especially in Gaza and the West Bank, has caused alarming harm to children. She concluded by commending the work of UN Special Representative Virginia Gamba for her unwavering efforts in protecting children affected by conflict.
