Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced a groundbreaking policy to encourage population growth, declaring that only couples with more than two children will be eligible to contest local body elections. Speaking at an event in Naravaripalle, Naidu emphasized that this move aims to address the declining population growth in the state. He noted that reversing the trend of low birthrates is crucial for ensuring a robust workforce to support the aging demographic.
Naidu
highlighted the shift from past policies that discouraged large families.
“Previously, individuals with many children were barred from contesting
elections. Now, we are flipping that approach. To be a sarpanch, municipal
councillor, corporation chairman, or mayor, you must have more than two
children,” he stated. This policy reflects his government's commitment to
incentivizing families to have more children and securing long-term demographic
stability.
The
Chief Minister expressed concerns about the broader implications of declining
fertility rates in northern India, predicting that the region may face
challenges similar to those in countries struggling with aging populations. He
pointed out that younger generations are increasingly adopting smaller family
norms, including “double income, no kids” lifestyles, which could erode the
demographic advantage in the next 15 years.
