Early Saturday morning, the national capital was covered in severe fog, leading to significant disruptions at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Visibility plummeted, resulting in the delay of 81 trains and the diversion of 15 flights to alternate destinations.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed on social media that the reduced visibility was impacting flight operations. They urged passengers to check with their airlines for real-time updates and expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused.
IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory at 1:05 am, announcing a temporary halt to both departures and arrivals at Delhi Airport due to the fog. "Departures and arrivals at #DelhiAirport are currently on hold due to reduced visibility," the airline stated, cautioning that even after operations resumed, delays could continue due to airside congestion.
Air India followed suit at 1:16 am, acknowledging that the poor visibility was affecting flights not only in Delhi but also across parts of northern India.
Passengers faced considerable delays and uncertainty as the dense fog posed operational challenges for airlines. This disruption follows a similar incident on Friday, when adverse weather conditions resulted in over 400 flight delays at the same airport.
