At least 42 people have lost their lives in Nepal due to landslides and floods triggered by intense rainfall over the past 36 hours, according to authorities.
A spokesperson for Nepal Police confirmed that 18 fatalities occurred in the eastern district of Ilam, near the Indian border, while three others died from lightning strikes in southern Nepal.
Local officials reported that several major highways have been closed or damaged, leaving hundreds stranded and significantly disrupting domestic flights, although international flights are still in operation. In southeastern Nepal, the Koshi River's water levels have surpassed danger thresholds, raising concerns for further flooding, especially in India's Bihar state.
Meanwhile, the capital city of Kathmandu faces isolation as river flooding inundated roads and homes, cutting it off from the rest of the country.
