The search for victims of last week’s Indonesian school collapse concluded on Tuesday, with the confirmed death toll rising to 67. The tragic incident occurred when part of a multi-storey Islamic boarding school on Java island collapsed on September 29 during afternoon prayers attended by more than 170 students.
Mohammad Syafi, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), announced at a press conference that the search and rescue operations had officially ended on the ninth day. Yudhi Bramantyo, the agency's operations director, stated that all rubble had been cleared from the site and further discovery of bodies was deemed highly unlikely.
In total, 171 people were evacuated from the site, with 67 confirmed dead, including eight body parts, and 104 survivors, according to Bramantyo. The deputy head of the national disaster agency, Budi Irawan, echoed the sentiment that finding more bodies is improbable. So far, only 17 bodies have been identified by the police’s Disaster Victim Identification unit.
The collapse has been marked as Indonesia’s deadliest disaster this year by the National Disaster Agency (BNPB).
