Israeli
forces on Thursday intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla as it approached the
Gaza coast, detaining dozens of international activists on board, including
climate activist Greta Thunberg. The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid and
volunteers, had been broadcasting live footage for safety as it sailed toward
the besieged enclave.
The
interception came despite international appeals for the ships to be allowed
safe passage. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese and Colombian President
Gustavo Petro had earlier urged Israel to let the flotilla proceed unharmed,
stressing the mission’s humanitarian nature. Organizers said the voyage was
intended to highlight the plight of Gaza’s civilians under blockade.
Israel justified the move by citing its long-standing naval blockade on Gaza, insisting the flotilla was attempting to “breach a lawful blockade.” However, legal experts and rights groups argue that international law guarantees the right of humanitarian missions to reach civilians in conflict zones. The incident is expected to spark renewed debate over the legality of the blockade and Israel’s handling of humanitarian aid.
