Washington: Democrats have seized control of
both houses of Congress in a rout of President Donald Trump's Republicans in
the midterm elections, US networks projected. After earlier winning the House
of Representatives, Democrats flipped Senate seats in at least six states,
including traditional Republican strongholds Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.
The results mark a major shift in Washington,
handing Democrats control of both chambers and the legislative agenda for the
final two years of Trump's term.
The outcome sets up a confrontational final
two years of Trump's time in the White House, with Democrats now able to block
the president's legislative priorities and launch congressional investigations.
Republicans had been expected to face headwinds amid a closely watched campaign season, but the scale of the Democratic gains - including in reliably conservative states - signalled a strong rebuke from voters.
