Washington: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has claimed
victory over Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan US Senate race following a
fierce battle, as Democrats rode a wave of midterm wins across the country.
Ilhan Omar also won re-election to the US House for Minnesota's 5th
congressional district. President Donald Trump had called for Omar to resign
from Congress, reviving allegations of identity fraud after a court filing
identified the Minnesota politician by an additional name.
Reacting to the Democratic gains, former
President Barack Obama posted on X: "Tonight, the American people sent a
clear message – they want a politics that brings people together rather than
divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they
face." He noted that candidates took a chance to run "in areas once
long considered long shots."
Obama added: "While this administration
has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves …
prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future."
The results add to a strong night for Democrats, who seized control of both houses of Congress after flipping Senate seats in at least six states, including Republican strongholds Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.
