In the northeastern Indian state of Assam, at least 10 people have died in the past 24 hours due to severe flooding following continuous heavy rains, with authorities describing the situation as "unprecedented devastation." This brings the total death toll for the week to 36, according to state officials.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported on Wednesday that more than 650,000 residents across 11 districts have been impacted by the deluge. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the unprecedented nature of the disaster in a social media post but provided no further details.

The floods have been attributed to extremely heavy rainfall in the neighboring state of Nagaland between July 18 and 20, which led to unusually high river flows, as per a state government report.
