The Supreme Court's intervention has prompted the Central government to commit to implementing a law aimed at enhancing aviation safety and curbing excessive airline ticket prices. This law, introduced one-and-a-half years ago, is expected to alleviate the concerns of Malayali expatriates who have long faced steep airfare hikes during peak travel seasons.
On January 20, the Supreme Court warned it would issue directions to halt alleged overcharging if the government did not act. Although Parliament had passed legislation granting the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) greater regulatory powers, the government had delayed its implementation. The Centre has now informed the court that the rules under the law have been finalised and will be presented in Parliament during the Monsoon Session from July 20 to August 13.
A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta directed the Centre to submit a sealed copy of the rules within two weeks, regardless of their status in Parliament. The case is scheduled for a hearing on August 3. This directive emerged from a petition filed by social activist S. Lakshmi Narayanan, advocating for stronger airline regulation. The Centre has yet to disclose the rules, which pertain to the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, effective January 1, 2025.
