Heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide in Kerala's Wayanad district on Tuesday, claiming the lives of at least five people at the Anakkompoyil–Meppadi tunnel road project site near Meenakshi Bridge in Kalladi.
Construction workers were at the site when the landslide struck. Rescue teams, along with local residents, immediately launched operations to pull survivors from the debris. Authorities fear around 10 more people may still be trapped, while six injured people have been admitted to hospital.
Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan convened an emergency meeting with Agriculture Minister T. Siddique and directed officials to carry out rescue and relief operations on a war footing.
Continuous heavy rainfall has hampered rescue efforts, with emergency teams racing against time to locate those still missing. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as adverse weather conditions continue across parts of Kerala.
