The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced, honouring the finest achievements in Indian cinema across feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema. The awards recognise films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) during the 2024 calendar year.
Malayalam cinema emerged as one of the major highlights, with Feminichi Fathima winning the award for Best Malayalam Film and veteran actor Mammootty being named Best Actor for his acclaimed performance in Bramayugam.
Feminichi Fathima, a satirical drama exploring the social, religious and patriarchal challenges faced by women, received the Best Malayalam Film honour. Bramayugam also added another major accolade by winning the Best Cinematography award. In the screenplay category, Pushpa 2 secured the Best Screenplay award.
Among the regional winners, Raayan, directed by Dhanush, was selected as the Best Tamil Film, while Kannada film Mithya, directed by debutant Sumanth Bhat and produced by Rakshit Shetty, won the Best Kannada Film award. Dhanush also received a Special Mention for his performance in Captain Miller, adding another National Award recognition to his career.
In the non-feature film section, Blue won the Best Sound Design award, NDA received the Best Editing honour, and the Marathi documentary Parat 41 Chya Magavar (On the Trail of 41°) earned the Best Music Direction award. Soundarya Jayachandran was recognised as Best Narrator/Voice Over for the English-language film Little Planet: A Tale of Frogs, while Obur (Clouds) won the Best Script award.
The awards also recognised excellence in cinema literature, with Naaniruvude Nimagaagi Naadiruvude Nanagaagi: Kannada Cinemada Thathva Matthu Rajakeeya winning the Best Book on Cinema award. Hindi film critic Sanjeev Shrivastava was honoured as Best Film Critic, while several documentaries and short films received Special Mention awards, reflecting the diversity and creative excellence of Indian cinema.
