A
former Google DeepMind researcher has joined growing warnings over the
potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence, saying AI could “kill us
all” and that time may be running out to prevent such an outcome.
Bilal
Chughtai, who worked as a research engineer on AGI safety and alignment at
Google DeepMind, said he recently resigned from the company. In a post on X, he
said he “earnestly” believed AI had the potential to cause human extinction and
called for greater caution in the development of advanced AI systems.
His
comments follow similar warnings from Anthropic researchers, including Jacob
Coxon and Evan Hubinger. Hubinger said he believed there was a greater than 10%
chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade. Anthropic CEO
Dario Amodei has also called for a slowdown in the pace of advanced AI
development, receiving backing from Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Chughtai
said AI could be developed safely, but only with greater coordination among
technology companies. He called for AI development to proceed at a pace society
can manage, allowing emerging risks to be addressed before extreme harm occurs.
US President Donald Trump, however, has dismissed calls for increased
regulation of the AI industry, describing them as a “hoax.”
