The death toll from catastrophic flash floods in Nepal has reached 781, while more than 2,500 individuals remain unaccounted for, according to the country's disaster authority on Sunday, August 30, 2026. As rescue operations stretch into their fifth day, Chinese state media reported 16 fatalities in Tibet, with 546 people still missing.
Rescuers have recovered bodies from eight affected districts in Nepal. They are racing against time to find the missing and assist those trapped since the disaster struck. Both Nepalese and Chinese rescue teams are contending with treacherous conditions, including thick mud, rising rivers, and a newly formed lake, as they search for thousands of people swept away by the deadly surge of water and debris that engulfed entire villages in the Himalayas.
Moreover, Nepal has begun burying hundreds of bodies, after collecting DNA samples to ensure families can reclaim their loved ones and conduct traditional funeral rites once they are identified.
