ICC Library to open with 6,000 books for Indian community

Doha: The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), functioning under the aegis of the Embassy of India in Qatar, has announced the establishment of a community library at its premises, marking a major step towards promoting reading, learning, and knowledge-sharing among the Indian community in Qatar. Details of the initiative and the upcoming inauguration ceremony were shared during a press meet held at the ICC premises.

The ICC Library will be formally inaugurated on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 8pm by H.E. Mr. Vipul, Ambassador of India to the State of Qatar. A senior official from the Qatar National Library will attend the function as the Guest of Honour. The inauguration is expected to be a landmark event in ICC's ongoing efforts to strengthen educational and cultural engagement within the Indian diaspora.

Housing more than 6,000 books in various Indian languages, the library is among the largest community-driven Indian language library collections in Qatar. The extensive collection includes novels, short stories, poetry, fiction, autobiographies, biographies, travelogues, children's literature, health and wellness publications, reference materials, and books on culture, history, and contemporary subjects, catering to readers of all age groups.

A unique aspect of the ICC Library is that its collection has been built entirely through the generous contributions of community organisations and individual donors residing in Qatar. The initiative reflects the collective commitment of the Indian community towards promoting literacy, preserving linguistic diversity, and nurturing a culture of reading among future generations. ICC officials stated that the library is envisioned as a vibrant community knowledge centre serving students, professionals, researchers, writers, and readers, while also hosting literary events, author interactions, reading sessions, book discussions, and educational programmes.

Addressing the media, ICC office-bearers highlighted the importance of creating a dedicated space for learning and cultural exchange. The press meet was attended by ICC President Manikantan A. P., Vice President Shantanu Deshpande, General Secretary Abraham K. Joseph, Secretaries Afsal Abdul Majeed and Pradeep Pillai, Head of Finance Biswajit Banerji, Head of Affiliation Ravindra Prasad, Head of In-house Activities Venkappa Bhagavatula, Head of External Activities and Literature Clubs Purvi Shroff, Head of Cultural Activities Nandini Abbagouni, Head of IT & Social Media Sandeep Sriramareddy, and Head of HR, Administration and Consular Affairs Rakesh Wagh. The officials briefed the media on the vision behind the library and its role in enriching the educational and cultural landscape of the Indian community in Qatar.
