The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an orange alert for twelve districts in Kerala, a day after sections of the state experienced over 300 mm of rainfall. The districts under the orange alert include Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Earlier in the day, IMD’s 4 a.m. bulletin placed Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod under a red alert for the subsequent three hours. These areas are expected to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by maximum surface wind speeds of up to 50 kmph. An orange alert is also in effect for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Thrissur, where moderate rainfall and winds reaching 50 kmph are anticipated during the same timeframe. The remaining districts in Kerala are forecasted to experience moderate rainfall with maximum surface wind speeds of up to 40 kmph, according to the IMD.
This warning follows an intense downpour on Saturday that inundated several regions across Kerala.
