New Delhi: India's National Commission
for Protection of Child Rights rescued more than 3,800 children under the age
of 14 from child labour during a special campaign over the past two-and-a-half
months, the federal government said in a statement on Friday.
The campaign, carried out between June 12 and
August 31 across the country, led to over 575 formal police complaints against
those found employing children. Under the Child and Adolescent Labour
(Prohibition and Regulation) Act, the minimum legal age for employment in India
is 14 years.
All state governments were sensitised to intensify the identification, rescue, and rehabilitation of children engaged in child labour and those vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation. The NCPCR also undertook awareness and outreach through social media and other platforms, disseminating information on reporting child labour and the importance of rehabilitation and educational mainstreaming following rescue.
