Supreme Court on Monday raised concerns over the unchecked increase in airfares during peak travel times, warning airlines that they could face stringent action for non-compliance with regulatory norms. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta addressed a plea challenging the alleged arbitrary pricing by private airlines, suggesting that flights could be halted if regulations are not followed.
The plea, filed by social activist S Lakshmi Narayanan, accused airlines of randomly setting fares, especially during high-demand periods. The court's observation coincided with the Centre's announcement that it is nearing completion of a regulatory framework for airfares. Additional Solicitor General Anil Kaushik assured the bench that the government would finalize and present the rules within three weeks, having already submitted a draft in a sealed cover.
The petitioner highlighted the exorbitant charges imposed on passengers during festivals and holidays and criticized the lack of enforcement of the government's existing guidelines. The petitioner also pointed to a statement by the Civil Aviation Minister in Parliament, acknowledging the government's inability to cap airfares.
