Kochi: A Batik Air flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi witnessed a tense mid-air incident after a 36-year-old Malayali passenger allegedly damaged the emergency exit window panel and attempted to open the aircraft's emergency exit door while the plane was in flight. Cabin crew and fellow passengers quickly restrained him, allowing the aircraft to land safely at Cochin International Airport.
The accused, identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal of Palakkad, was taken into custody by CISF personnel upon landing and later arrested by the Nedumbassery police. According to police, the incident occurred aboard Flight OD231 on Wednesday night, causing panic among passengers before the situation was brought under control.
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Aircraft Act, and the Kerala Police Act for endangering the safety of the aircraft and its passengers. Police said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the incident, while preliminary inquiries found no evidence that the passenger was under the influence of alcohol.
