The
International Maritime Organization (IMO) has declared that no nation possesses
the legal authority to obstruct shipping in international transit straits.
IMO
Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today
programme, warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent regardless of
ongoing regional conflicts.
"There is no legal basis in international law to take any actions to block any strait used for international navigation," Dominguez stated. He expressed growing concern for the 20,000 seafarers currently trapped in the Persian Gulf and emphasized that continued retaliation would deepen global economic instability the longer the impasse persists.
