At
least two vessels successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday despite
the newly implemented US naval blockade, according to maritime tracking data
from Kpler. The Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Christianna exited after unloading
corn at Iran's Bandar Imam Khomeini port, while the container ship Paya Lebar crossed
en route from India to Dubai.
The transits are the first reported instances of commercial ships navigating the corridor since US Central Command imposed a total blockade of Iranian ports on April 13. Iran's UN ambassador called the blockade a "grave violation of sovereignty," while reports indicate Saudi Arabia has been privately urging Washington to reconsider the measure to avoid destabilizing global energy markets.
