DOHA: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), in collaboration with Qatar Reads, an initiative under Qatar National Library, has launched an environmental awareness competition inviting children to write and illustrate the best short story on protecting the ozone layer. The competition is open to children aged 10 to 14 years.
The initiative reflects Qatar's commitment to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. It also aligns with this year's World Ozone Day theme, "Global Action for a Cooler Planet."
The competition aims to strengthen environmental awareness among young people by encouraging them to creatively express the importance of protecting the climate and adopting positive environmental practices through storytelling and illustration. Entries may be submitted individually or by teams of up to three children.
MECC has announced attractive cash prizes for the winners. The first-place winner will receive QR4,000, along with the opportunity to have the winning story printed and published. The second and third prizes are QR3,000 and QR2,000, respectively. Winners and distinguished participants will be honoured during the official World Ozone Day celebration on September 16.
The ministry has set September 1 as the deadline for submissions. Participants are required to send their entries directly to the ministry via the dedicated email address CHWD@mecc.gov.qa. The competition is expected to inspire children to contribute to environmental protection through creativity while raising awareness about safeguarding the ozone layer.
