Qatar University develops AI-powered wearable device for non-invasive blood glucose monitoring

Doha: Qatar University has developed GlucoWatch, an AI-powered wearable device that estimates blood glucose levels without finger pricks or blood samples. Developed by a research team led by Dr Khalid Abu Al Saud with computer engineering students, the device analyses physiological signals such as heart rate, blood pressure and demographic data to provide glucose estimates through a connected mobile application.

The smart system is designed to support diabetes management by offering regular glucose monitoring, sending alerts when readings fall outside safe ranges, and enabling secure sharing of health data with family members and healthcare providers. The innovation has been granted a published US patent application (US20240138776A) and won a gold medal at the International Invention Fair of the Middle East in Kuwait in 2023.

The research team is now focused on expanding clinical validation, enhancing its AI models and developing an advanced version of the device. Qatar University aims to collaborate with healthcare and industry partners to bring GlucoWatch to the market as an affordable solution, supporting Qatar National Vision 2030 and advancing digital healthcare innovation.
