Los Angeles: Mikel Merino once again proved to be Spain's match-winner, scoring a dramatic late goal as the European champions edged Belgium 2-1 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals. Coming off the bench, the Arsenal midfielder struck in the 88th minute after Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens spilled Pau Cubarsi's long-range effort.
Spain
had taken the lead through Fabian Ruiz in the 30th minute, but Belgium
responded before half-time with Charles De Ketelaere's header, ending Spain's
remarkable 649-minute run without conceding a goal in the tournament. The match
appeared destined for extra time before Merino delivered another decisive late
strike.
The
victory sets up a blockbuster semi-final clash between Spain and France on July 14. Merino had also scored the
stoppage-time winner against Portugal in the Round of 16, continuing his
impressive impact as Spain move one step closer to World Cup glory.
