The death toll from the massive earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand surpassed 1,000 on Saturday, as rescuers frantically searched through the rubble for survivors.
The devastating 7.7-magnitude quake hit northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar in the early afternoon, followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. Buildings were destroyed, bridges collapsed, and roads were severely damaged, with significant destruction reported in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city.
According to a statement from the ruling junta, at least 1,002 people have died and nearly 2,400 have been injured in Myanmar, while around 10 deaths have been confirmed in Bangkok. With communication lines severely disrupted, the full extent of the disaster is still unfolding, and the death toll is expected to rise.
