Myanmar earthquake death toll rises to 1,700, hundreds still missing

The death toll from the catastrophic earthquake that hit Myanmar has surpassed 1,700, with additional bodies being retrieved from the debris, as reported by the military-led government.


On Monday, government spokesperson Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun announced that approximately 3,400 individuals have sustained injuries, and over 300 are still missing. Previously, the death toll was noted at 1,644, but no further specific details were provided in the most recent update.


The earthquake, measuring 7.7 in magnitude, struck on Friday afternoon, resulting in extensive devastation, particularly affecting the capital, Naypyidaw, and the second-largest city, Mandalay.
