Prime
Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two new sections of the Vadodara-Mumbai
Expressway on Tuesday, making approximately 150 kilometers of the 379-km-long
project operational. The newly opened stretches connect Vadodara to Bharuch and
Ankleshwar, as well as Surat to Navsari. These sections are part of the larger
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (NE-4) and represent a significant step toward
improving connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The
operational segments include the 36-km Kim-Ena section running from the Kim
Interchange to the Ena Interchange near Surat, and the 27.5-km Gandeva-Ena
section extending to the Gandeva-Kharel Interchange near Navsari. Together,
these 63.5 km of eight-lane, access-controlled greenfield expressway were
constructed at a cost of Rs 7,689 crore. With this inauguration, a continuous
expressway network now links Ahmedabad to Navsari, covering Vadodara, Bharuch,
Ankleshwar, Kim, Surat, and Navsari.
The
expressway is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and heavy
vehicle pressure on the old Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway (NH-48). It will
provide substantial savings in time and fuel for freight transport,
particularly benefiting South Gujarat's textile, diamond, and chemical sectors,
along with port-based industrial hubs in Surat, Dahej, Ankleshwar, and Hazira.
The corridor offers high-speed connectivity across Surat, Kim, Vadodara,
Bardoli, and Navsari regions without traffic interruptions.
Construction is currently underway on the Valsad-Vapi section in South Gujarat and the Palghar, Virar, and JNPT (Navi Mumbai) sections in Maharashtra. The entire expressway is expected to be completed by 2027-2028. Once finished, it will provide direct connectivity to Surat and Navsari, and link to major infrastructure including the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway, KMP Expressway, DND Flyway, Noida International Airport at Jewar, and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi and Mumbai-Pune Expressways.
