QR500,000 compensation upheld for visitor injured in Qatar limousine accident

Doha: Qatar’s Investment and Trade Court’s Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling awarding QR500,000 in compensation to a foreign visitor who suffered serious injuries in a limousine accident during his holiday in Qatar. The compensation covers material and moral damages and is to be jointly paid by the driver, the limousine company and the vehicle’s insurer.

The visitor sustained spinal fractures, partial amputation of a finger on his left hand and partial hearing loss. He also incurred substantial medical expenses in Qatar and abroad and lost income after being unable to work. A criminal court had earlier convicted the limousine driver over the accident.

The court found that the driver’s negligence, recklessness and failure to maintain a safe distance, along with violations of traffic rules, caused the accident. Although the visitor had sought QR3 million in damages, the appeal court upheld the QR500,000 compensation awarded by the Court of First Instance.
