Alexander Zverev have finally banished his US Open demons, defeating American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in the final to lift his maiden US Open title. The German avenged his heartbreaking 2020 defeat, when he surrendered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem in the final.

The victory comes on Zverev's 11th appearance at the New York Grand Slam and follows his breakthrough French Open triumph in June. He also secured a Grand Slam-record $5.5 million winner's prize with his victory.

Shelton, seeded eighth, was bidding to end a 23-year wait for an American men's Grand Slam champion and become the first Black American man to reach the US Open final in 54 years. However, the 23-year-old struggled to produce his best tennis in his first major final.

Zverev made a blistering start and took control early, with Shelton's inexperience proving costly. The German remained composed throughout the contest and sealed victory when Shelton sent a return long. So focused was Zverev that he initially failed to realise he had won, before finally celebrating at the net with Shelton.
