Doha: Al Jazeera Media Network has made an urgent
appeal to the global journalistic community, press freedom organisations, and
legal institutions to take immediate and decisive action to halt the ongoing
forced starvation and targeted attacks on journalists in Gaza. For over 21
months, Gaza has endured relentless Israeli bombardment and a deepening
humanitarian crisis, leaving nearly two million people in desperate need and
pushing media professionals to the brink of survival.
Journalists in Gaza have continued their work
under extreme conditions, risking their lives and those of their families to
document the devastation and atrocities unfolding on the ground. However, many
now find themselves facing starvation and exhaustion. On July 19, several Al
Jazeera journalists shared emotional messages on social media, expressing their
deteriorating conditions. One of the most heart-wrenching posts came from Al
Jazeera Arabic correspondent Anas AlShariff, who wrote, “I am drowning in hunger,
trembling in exhaustion, and resisting the fainting that follows me every
moment… Gaza is dying. And we die with it.”
Al Jazeera’s Director General, Dr. Mostefa Souag,
highlighted the dire situation, stating that the world must not ignore the
suffering of these frontline journalists. “We owe it to the courageous
journalists in Gaza to amplify their voices and put an end to the unbearable
suffering they are enduring due to forced starvation and targeted killings by
Israeli occupation forces,” he said, urging immediate international
intervention.
Dr. Souag further emphasized the responsibility of
the global journalistic community, warning that failure to act could have
devastating consequences. “If we fail to act now, we risk a future where there
may be no one left to tell our stories,” he said. “Our inaction will be
