Doha, Qatar: The Public Works
Authority (Ashghal) has announced the completion of school zone safety measures
around 669 schools across Qatar,
alongside the development of 53
existing schools that included upgrades to fire protection systems. The
initiative, carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and
Higher Education, aims to protect students, enhance safety for road users
during school drop-off and pick-up, and improve the overall efficiency of
educational facilities.
As part of a broader plan, Ashghal
will also develop 140 schools,
upgrading fire protection, educational, recreational, and sports facilities, as
well as reconstructing seven schools to meet the latest global standards in
design and equipment. Engineers confirmed that technical enhancements and
operational improvements have been introduced to raise building efficiency and
ensure a safe, modern learning environment.
In parallel, Ashghal has implemented comprehensive road safety measures under the School Zone Safety Programme, covering 673 schools since its launch in 2013. Recent improvements include upgraded traffic signs, pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, repainted road markings, expanded sidewalks, and ramps for accessibility. These efforts aim to regulate traffic flow, enforce the 30 km/h speed limit near schools, and ensure safer access for students, particularly during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
