Doha, Qatar:
Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui has named a 23-player squad for the FIFA Arab Cup
Qatar 2025, which kicks off on December 1. Star striker Almoez Ali misses out
after undergoing leg surgery in London, leaving Akram Afif to spearhead the
attack as Qatar aim to surpass their third-place finish from the 2021 edition.
Qatar will begin their campaign on December 1 at Al Bayt Stadium against the
winner of the Palestine–Libya qualifier.
The
squad, announced following the conclusion of Round 10 of the Qatar Stars
League, reflects a blend of experience and fresh talent. While veterans Boualem
Khoukhi, Karim Boudiaf and Pedro Miguel have been omitted, seasoned players
including Abdulaziz Hatem, Ahmed Alaaeldin, Assim Madibo, Edmilson Junior and
Lucas Mendes return. Young prospects Yousuf Ayman and Mohammed Khalid have also
been included, highlighting Lopetegui’s focus on integrating emerging talent
ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup preparations.
Goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada leads the trio between
the posts, supported by Meshaal Barsham and Shehab Al Laithi. Mohammed Muntari
is expected to play a key role in attack, with the tournament set to run until
December 18, culminating at Lusail Stadium. Qatar, who recently played a
friendly against Zimbabwe, will hold a brief training camp before the
competition begins.
