Doha: The
Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has urged all Muslims to fast on the
day of Ashura in the month of Al Muharram, reminding them that the fast is
highly encouraged in Islamic law.
The ministry clarified that scholars have outlined three permissible levels of fasting: fasting for three consecutive days (the 9th, 10th, and 11th of Muharram); fasting on the 9th and 10th only; or fasting on the 10th alone. The statement also noted that fasting on Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year.
