Doha,
Qatar: During a press conference in Doha, European Council President António
Costa expressed the European Union’s strong support for Qatar and its neighbours
following recent regional escalations. Costa condemned actions that violated
the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gulf nations and thanked regional
partners for ensuring the safety of European citizens.
Costa
emphasized the urgent need for a stable, lasting ceasefire to pave the way for
sustainable peace. He also highlighted the critical importance of restoring
freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, which he
described as vital arteries for global trade. To address these security
concerns, he noted that European partners are working to assemble an
international coalition to guarantee safe passage for commercial shipping.
The visit, which included stops in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, underscores the growing strategic partnership between the EU and the Gulf. Costa urged all parties to capitalize on the momentum of the recent U.S.-Iran ceasefire to address broader issues, including ballistic missile programs and maritime security, reiterating the EU's commitment to diplomacy and multilateralism.
