Jakarta: Indonesia officially began enforcing a social media ban for children under the age of 16 this Saturday.
Communications
Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized that there is "no room for
compromise," requiring all digital platforms to align their services with
the new regulations immediately. The ban was introduced to combat rising
concerns over cyberbullying, online pornography, and internet addiction among
the nation's youth.
While platforms like X and Bigo Live have already
updated their minimum user age to comply, TikTok confirmed it is working
closely with the ministry to manage and restrict accounts belonging to minors.
This legislative shift mirrors a similar policy enacted in Australia last December and comes as other nations, including Britain, move toward similar restrictions. The global pressure on tech companies is intensifying, highlighted by a recent $6 million US court judgment against Meta and YouTube for the "addictive design" of their platforms.
