UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced yesterday the creation of a special task force to develop technical mechanisms for addressing humanitarian needs and securing the trade of fertilizers and raw materials through the Strait of Hormuz.
During a press conference, UN Spokesperson Stephane
Dujarric explained that the task force was formed due to the ongoing Middle
East conflict and growing concerns that disruptions to maritime trade could
severely impact global agricultural production. He emphasized that any trade
interference in the Strait of Hormuz poses a threat to food security and
humanitarian aid in the coming months.
Dujarric stressed Guterres’ commitment to reaching a comprehensive settlement to the conflict, noting that immediate action is necessary to mitigate consequences of the current instability.
