New
Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described the commencement of a
three-day special session of Parliament as a "historic step" toward
strengthening women’s empowerment in India. In a post on X, the Prime Minister
emphasized that the respect for mothers and sisters is synonymous with respect
for the nation, underlining the government’s commitment to advancing the
dignity and political representation of women.
The
special sitting, scheduled from April 16 to 18, focuses on amending the Nari
Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to ensure its full implementation by the 2029 general
elections. Key legislative items include the Constitution (131st Amendment)
Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026. The government has proposed
increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850 to
accommodate the 33% reservation without reducing the number of general seats.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister urged all political parties to rise above partisan politics and support the legislation in the national interest. He assured regional leaders that the delimitation exercise would not disadvantage any state, particularly those in the south that have successfully controlled population growth. He reiterated that the goal is to transform the role of women in decision-making, ensuring that equality and justice become a lived reality for every woman in India.
