Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality, through its Fisheries Department, has announced the commencement of the annual kingfish (Kanad) fishing ban. According to a social media post by the department, the ban will be enforced from August 15 to October 31 each year. This initiative aims to conserve kingfish stocks and ensure the sustainable management of the nation's marine resources.
During this period, the use of fixed gillnets (mansab nets) for kingfish fishing will be prohibited. Additionally, the transport and trade of kingfish gillnets will not be allowed. However, fishing for kingfish using hook and line methods will still be permitted throughout the ban.
The Ministry highlighted that kingfish production reached approximately 3,484 tonnes in 2025, underscoring the importance of these conservation efforts.
