Two US Navy
guided-missile destroyers reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz on
Saturday, marking the first such transit since the start of the conflict with
Iran. The operation, reported by The Wall Street Journal and Axios, was
conducted without coordination with Tehran and proceeded without incident.
In a statement on his
Truth Social platform, President Donald Trump said the United States has begun
the process of "clearing out" the strategic waterway. He described
the move as a service to nations like China, Japan, and France, while noting
that Iranian sea mines remain a lingering threat to maritime traffic.
The transit comes as senior Iranian and American officials began negotiations in Islamabad on Saturday to end the conflict that has disrupted global energy markets. While a fragile ceasefire was recently established, the reopening of the strait, which handles a fifth of the world’s crude oil, remains a central point of contention in the ongoing diplomatic talks.
