A Bangladesh court has ordered the detention of at least 70 lawyers connected to the former government for their alleged involvement in the attempted murder of fellow lawyers during last year's revolution. The detained lawyers, all senior advocates, were affiliated with the Awami League party, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a student-led uprising in August 2024.

Khorshed Alam, representing a private petitioner, told Prothom Alo, a Bengali daily, that the defendants faced charges of attempted murder and assault. He described the situation as unprecedented, noting the unusual nature of such assaults occurring within court premises and the large number of lawyers taken into custody simultaneously. The court in Dhaka granted bail to one lawyer, the former president of the bar association, and nine women lawyers.

Lutfor Rahman, representing ten of the accused, stated that his clients had been on bail for eight weeks and appeared in court for an extension. He mentioned that the case was filed by a bar association executive committee member shortly after Sheikh Hasina's departure.

Sheikh Hasina fled to India last year as protesters stormed her palace. Bangladesh has requested her extradition to face charges, including mass murder and crimes against humanity, related to the deaths of hundreds of protesters.
