Mbappé brace powers France into World Cup knockout stage after storm delay

France secured a 3-0 victory over Iraq in their World Cup group match on Monday, but the game in Philadelphia was overshadowed by a two-hour weather delay. A severe storm forced the second half to be suspended, with fans evacuated from the mostly uncovered Lincoln Financial Field for safety. The match eventually resumed more than two hours late, marking the first weather interruption of this tournament.

Kylian Mbappe marked his 100th international cap with two goals, netting in the 14th minute and again nine minutes after the restart. The 27-year-old now has 16 World Cup goals, moving level with Miroslav Klose and just two behind Lionel Messi, who broke the all-time record earlier that day. Mbappe also extended his France tally to 60 goals, having recently surpassed Olivier Giroud as the nation's top scorer.

Ousmane Dembele added a third on 66 minutes to complete the comfortable win, while Iraq’s defensive error gifted Mbappe his second goal. France now have two wins from two and are guaranteed a place in the last 32, while Iraq face near-certain elimination after back-to-back defeats. The French next face Norway on Friday, with Mbappe and Erling Haaland set for a mouth-watering showdown.
