Lionel Messi produced a stunning hat-trick as Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in their World Cup Group J opener, with the captain equalling Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup scoring record of 16 goals. The 38-year-old also became the first player in history to appear in six FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Messi
opened the scoring with a brilliant long-range strike in the 17th minute before
adding a second from close range shortly after the hour mark. He completed his
first-ever World Cup hat-trick in the 76th minute, sealing a dominant victory
for the defending champions.
Argentina
controlled much of the contest, with Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and
Nico Gonzalez all playing key roles in creating chances. Algeria battled hard
but were unable to break down a disciplined Argentine defence.
