Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a hard-fought Group H clash in Miami on Monday, despite dominating possession and creating the better chances. The South Americans were unable to turn their superiority into victory as Saudi Arabia secured a valuable point in challenging conditions.

The result leaves Group H wide open after another surprise earlier in the day, when European champions Spain were held to a goalless draw by World Cup debutants Cape Verde. With both opening matches ending level, all four teams remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
