Egypt
made an encouraging start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, holding
Belgium to a 1-1 draw in their Group G opener in Seattle. Emam Ashour put the
Pharaohs ahead in the 19th minute with a powerful finish after being set up by
captain Mohamed Salah, giving Egypt a deserved lead heading into halftime.
Belgium responded after the break and found an equalizer in the 66th minute when pressure from substitute Romelu Lukaku resulted in an own goal by Mohamed Hany. Egypt remained resilient in the closing stages, with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir producing crucial saves to secure a valuable point as both teams opened their World Cup campaigns with a draw.
