Iran began their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a match overshadowed by political tensions and protests. Despite being favorites, Iran twice fell behind as New Zealand striker Elijah Just scored two goals, putting pressure on Team Melli from the start.
Iran
responded through Ramin Rezaeian, who equalized in the first half after New
Zealand's early opener. Just restored New Zealand's lead shortly after the
break, but Mohammad Mohebi headed home in the 64th minute to level the score
once again and keep Iran in the contest.
Iran dominated much of the final half hour but failed to find a winning goal due to missed chances and determined New Zealand defending. The draw leaves Iran with work to do in Group G, while New Zealand remain in search of their first-ever World Cup victory.
