Cristiano
Ronaldo's record-equalling sixth World Cup got off to a disappointing start as
the Democratic Republic of Congo secured their first ever point at the finals
with a 1-1 draw against Portugal. Joao Neves headed Portugal ahead early, but
Yoane Wissa rose unmarked to equalise before half-time with his country's
first-ever World Cup goal. Ronaldo, 41, was largely peripheral and missed two
late chances as the African side, appearing in their first World Cup since
1974, held firm.
England
launched their title charge with a 4-2 victory over Croatia in Arlington. Harry
Kane scored twice in the first half, including a retaken penalty, but Croatia
fought back through Martin Baturina and Petar Musa to level at 2-2. Jude
Bellingham put England ahead again just two minutes after the restart, and
substitute Marcus Rashford added a fourth with five minutes to go. Kane's two
goals took him to 10 World Cup goals, level with Gary Lineker as England's
all-time top scorer.
In
Toronto, Ghana snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in stoppage time.
Caleb Yirenkyi bundled in the winning goal in the fifth minute of added time,
settling an attritional battle that saw both sides struggle for chances. Ghana
triumphed despite being without midfielder Thomas Partey, who was denied a
World Cup visa by Canadian authorities due to a rape case in Britain. Veteran
coach Carlos Queiroz became only the second coach to appear in five consecutive
World Cups.
In Mexico City, Colombia defeated World Cup debutants Uzbekistan 3-1. Luis Diaz provided an assist for Daniel Munoz's opener, but Abbosbek Fayzullaev equalised with Uzbekistan's maiden World Cup goal. Diaz restored the lead with a shot that should have been stopped, and Jaminton Campaz sealed the win with a fine header in dying seconds. The victory put Colombia top of Group K.
