As the new academic year approaches, Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality has unveiled a comprehensive set of guidelines to ensure a healthier, safer, and more sustainable school year for students.
In a social media announcement, the ministry outlined important tips for preparing safe and healthy school meals:
- Store food safely and choose foods that can withstand the heat
- Prepare the meal in the morning, not the night before, and use a clean, safe lunch box
- Save water and use a reusable water bottle
- Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, protein sources, and whole grains
- Prepare an appropriate portion to help reduce food waste
The ministry also provided details on waste management practices:
- Place recyclable materials in the designated blue bin, including paper, plastic, glass, and metal cans
- Do not mix recuclable materials with food waste
- Place general waste in the grey bin
- Sort waste at the source to help keep your school clean and sustainable
To foster a green and sustainable school atmosphere, the ministry urged for:
- Take part in planting trees and seedlings inside and around the school.
- Care for plants and water them with the appropriate amount without wasting water.
- Protect green spaces and planting beds, and avoid damaging the plants.
- Help keep the soil and areas surrounding plants clean and free of waste.
Additionally, the ministry highlighted the role of inspections in maintaining a safe school environment:
- Inspectors ensure that food offered in the school canteen is safe and fit for consumption.
- They monitor the cleanliness of food preparation, storage, and preservation areas.
- They verify compliance with health requirements and general hygiene standards within school facilities.
- Regular inspections help identify violations and reduce health risks.
These efforts underline the importance of community involvement in creating a healthier and more sustainable environment for students.
