Doha, Qatar: The Ministry
of Interior (MoI) has released a set of public safety guidelines to help
residents safely handle encounters with stray dogs, highlighting key warning
signs and preventive measures through a series of infographics shared on social
media.
According
to the Ministry, stray dogs usually approach people out of curiosity or in
search of food and do not attack unless they feel threatened, frightened, or
are defending their territory or puppies. Understanding a dog’s body language
is essential to avoiding dangerous situations.
The
MoI advised that if a person encounters a stray dog, they should immediately
stop, remain calm, and avoid screaming or making sudden movements. Running away
should be avoided, as it may trigger the dog’s instinct to chase. People are
encouraged to create a barrier, such as holding a bag in front of them or
positioning themselves behind a vehicle or tree, and slowly back away until
they can safely leave the area.
In the event of an attack, individuals should use
any available means to protect themselves without turning their back on the
dog. To reduce the risk of encounters, the public is urged to avoid areas where
stray dogs are commonly seen, particularly at night.
The Ministry also warned against feeding stray
dogs regularly in the same location, as this may cause them to consider the
area as their territory. People should stay away from places where puppies are
kept and avoid direct eye contact with stray dogs, which may be perceived as a
challenge.
If a dog bite occurs, the MoI stressed the
importance of immediately visiting the nearest health center or hospital to
receive the rabies vaccine, even if the wound appears minor. “Acting quickly
can save your life,” the Ministry emphasized.
Members of the
public can report the presence of stray dogs by calling 2346555, which
connects to the Police Canine Section at the Criminal Evidence and Information
Department.
