Abu Dhabi: The
United Arab Emirates has announced its decision to withdraw from the
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the wider OPEC+
alliance, with the move set to take effect on May 1, 2026. The announcement, shared via
the official WAM news agency, describes the exit as a strategic shift aimed at
aligning with the country’s long-term economic vision and evolving energy
profile.
According to government officials, the decision follows a comprehensive review of the UAE’s energy policy and production capacity. By leaving the oil-producing bloc, the UAE seeks greater autonomy and flexibility in setting its own production targets, allowing it to respond more effectively to global market demands and accelerate domestic investment in energy infrastructure. This independence is particularly significant for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) as it continues its expansion as a global energy leader.
