Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering fight to restore democracy and defend human rights in her country. Once barred from elections and relentlessly targeted by the government, Machado became a symbol of peaceful resistance, proving that “ballots over bullets” can still challenge dictatorship.
Founder of the pro-democracy group Supoliticsmate, Machado has long
championed free and fair elections and stood firm against political
persecution. When her presidential candidacy was blocked in 2024, she united
the opposition by backing Edmundo
González Urrutia, mobilising millions of citizens to vote and monitor
the polls despite intimidation and state control.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado for her courage, integrity, and leadership, saying she “embodies the tools of democracy as the tools of peace.” Her recognition shines as a beacon of hope for Venezuela’s struggle for freedom — and for all who continue to believe in the power of peaceful change.
